How to Train a Puppy to Use the Puppy Mats

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting day. The new owners get to add a special member to the family and the puppy gains a home with people who will love and cherish it. But, as with many new things, there is a steep learning curve for all. The people learn about their puppy's individual needs and the puppy learns the skills it needs to become a treasured family member. The first step in this process is house-training. With the creation of puppy training pads, which are chemically treated to be attractive to puppies, this process is easier than the newspaper training method used in the past.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out the puppy training pads in the area(s) you want the dog to use for its bathroom duties. This can be inside or outside the home, or both.

    • 2

Place the puppy on the pad immediately after it wakes up from a nap and after eating and drinking. If the puppy wanders off the pads, return it to the pads until it eliminates.

    • 3

Praise the puppy each time it eliminates in the correct location.

    • 4

Watch the puppy for signs of walking around in circles and sniffing the floor. This is an indication that the puppy may be looking for a place to go to the bathroom. If this occurs, place the puppy on the training pads immediately.

    • 5

Confine the puppy to a small crate at night and whenever you are not able to watch the puppy for signs it needs to use the bathroom.
