How to Teach a Dog to Use a Dog Door

Some owners have a hard time getting their dog to use a dog door. The dog may be scared or simply not know what he is supposed to do. You can teach him the proper way to use the door by following a few easy steps. This will assure that he can get inside and outside when needed and you won't have to worry.

      Remove the flap from the dog door so you are left with an uncovered hole.

      Stand on the opposite side of the door from your dog and coax him through by holding a treat or toy and calling his name.

      Wait for your dog to come through the door. When he does, praise him repeatedly and give him the treat or toy. Repeat this process a few times, until you feel he is becoming more comfortable.

      Replace the cover on the dog door and repeat steps 2 and 3 until your dog learns how to go through the door with the flap in place.
