How to Stop a Puppy From Biting Your Pants

Puppies, just like most animals, go through a phase of teething or biting. While this is a natural phase, it does require special attention and repetitive training to prevent your puppy from biting and chewing at your clothes, furniture, and other household objects.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain a diverse collection of puppy chew toys around the house to redirect or distract your puppy when he bites. The Humane Society suggests offering a chew with one hand while petting the puppy with the other.

    • 2

Keep puppy chew toys handy. If the puppy decides to bite at your pant leg, stop and offer a chew toy.

    • 3

Look directly at your puppy and yell or yelp in a high-pitched tone when the puppy bites your pant leg. You can use words like "Ow" or "No" to alert your puppy that his behavior is unacceptable. It's important to use the same word each time. Repetition and consistency is key to training your puppy.

    • 4

Ignore your puppy after his bad behavior for about a minute. This may include walking away or leaving the room. After your puppy is calm, you can return to the training method of offering the chew toy.

    • 5

Avoid slapping or hitting your puppy as a training method. This can reinforce negative behavior and cause your pet to fear you.

    • 6

Reward and praise your pet for good behavior. Offer a a small treat or chew toys.
