Instructions

    • 1

Go to a pet store and buy a crate that is the right size for your dog. The crate needs to allow only enough space for your pet to lie down. Dogs will not eliminate where they sleep. Buy a crate with a divider to accommodate the growth of large-breed dogs. Wire crates provide the best ventilation and viewing for your pet.

    • 2

Place the crate in a room that is out of direct sunlight. The crate needs to be located where the dog can see the family members and monitor the house. The living room or family room is a good place. Throw a sheet or blanket over the top of the crate for pets that like tighter spaces.

    • 3

Acquaint the dog with the crate. Leave the door open, put in a favorite toy, and feed the dog in the crate. You also can place a dog bed in the crate. This allows the pet to get comfortable with it.

    • 4

Take your pet outside before and after crating the dog. Prevent accidents by not giving the dog food and water prior to crating or while in the crate.

    • 5

Place a favorite toy or a toy with treats inside into the crate. Close the door for two minutes. Calmly and without praise, let the dog out and take it outside. Increase the time intervals when the dog appears to be comfortable. Stay in the room, appear busy and do not make a big deal out of opening the door.
