How to Train With Electronic Collars

An electronic dog collar is used to train dogs off the leash. The dog wears a comfortable fitting collar, and once it exhibits unwanted behavior, such as chasing cars or knocking over garbage cans, it is corrected with a jolt of electricity, a vibration or the emitting of a loud, unwanted noise. Training a dog with an electronic dog collar must begin with teaching it simple commands, such as sit, come and stay. Once the dog knows these commands, it can be taught properly with the assistance of the electronic collar.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the collar on the dog. Make sure it fits comfortable but not too lose that it can slip off during heavy activity.

    • 2

Allow the dog to wear the collar for a few hours a day for several days before beginning training.

    • 3

Set the correct vibration or shock level of the collar. To accomplish this, place it on the lowest setting, and press the button on the remote control.

    • 4

Continue to bring it up one level until you notice a reaction in the dog, which will generally come in the form of the dog lifting its head or ceasing its present activity. This is the lowest sensitivity level the dog will respond to and the level that should be used initially.

    • 5

Say a command, such as "Sit", "Stay" or "Heel." Only commands that the dog knows should be used. If the dog does not respond, press the button on the remote to send out a vibration or shock.

    • 6

Repeat the command as you press the button so the dog begins to associate the correction with the sound of your voice.

    • 7

Repeat the command. Once the dog successfully responds to the command, reward it with a treat and a lot of praise.

    • 8

Allow the dog to roam outside or any area where he is performing any unwanted behaviors, such as scratching at the wall or chewing on furniture.

    • 9

Wait until the dog begins to perform the unwanted behavior, and press the button on the remote to send a vibration or shock.

    • 10

Continue to press the button each time the dog exhibits unwanted behavior. Eventually, the dog will begin to associate the unwanted shock or vibration with this behavior and will stop.
