Things You'll Need
- Chicken wire
- Chew toys
- Bitter apple spray
- Leash
Instructions
Set up a fence made of chicken wire around clusters of outdoor plants, flower gardens and other garden plants. Set up the fence so it is high enough to prevent the dog from jumping over it and is one foot in the ground to stop the dog from digging under it to reach the plants.
Create a separate dog run in your yard that is free of plants. Situate it so it is not located near any trees or bushes that your pet can easily reach and chew. Use this as a location where your dog can play and run without the risk of being distracted by outdoor vegetation. Put plenty of chew toys inside of the dog run to meet your dog's need to chew.
Monitor your pet at all times while it is outside. Distract it by engaging in fun activities such as playing fetch or taking your dog for a walk or run. As soon as you see that your pet is beginning to chew on a plant say "No!" in a firm and loud voice. Move your pet from the plant as soon as possible.
Spray bitter apple spray every 2 to 3 days on the leaves of your outdoor plants. The bitter taste will act as a deterrent to your pet and is a safe and non-toxic product to use.
Wet the leaves of you plant and sprinkle them with cayenne or black pepper. Also sprinkle the spices around the plants as a distasteful deterrent.
Put outdoor plants in an elevated box or planter that is out of your dog's reach.
