How do I Keep My Dog From Following Me When I Leave in My Car?

Dogs that chase after or follow moving vehicles are at an increased risk of being injured or killed. If you have no option but to leave your dog outdoors, the Dumb Friends League recommends keeping it in a securely fenced yard to prevent it from straying. One fencing option is an invisible electric fence, which you must set up and train your dog to acknowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an invisible electric fence at a pet supply or hardware store. Invisible electric fences are used to keep pets in an open area. According to the City of Lincoln Animal Control, the dog wears a transmitter collar that lets it come within a certain distance from the wire; when the dog goes over the boundary, it is shocked by the collar.

Install the invisible electric fence around your yard. Place the transmitter box near an active power source. Use a shovel to dig a small trench around the perimeter of your yard and lay the wiring inside. Cover the wiring with dirt. Attach the end pieces of the wiring to the ports located in the transmitter box. Fit the receiver collar on your dog.

Leash your dog and walk with it near the newly-laid invisible electric fence. The dog's collar will either beep or emit a shock if the boundary is breached. Forcefully exclaim, "No!" when your dog crosses the perimeter line and move it back swiftly. Repeat as many times as necessary until your dog fully understands the consequences of crossing the line.
