How to Use the Sensation Harness on a Dog

Unlike other harnesses, the Sensation harness provides a patented front connection allowing dogs to feel gentle pressure, which encourages communication and leads to better walks. Using a Sensation harness is not difficult; all it takes is fitting it well and getting your dog accustomed to it, which should take no time if you allow positive associations.

Instructions

Pass the measuring tape behind your dog's front legs and measure the circumference around the dog's belly as if measuring for a belt. This will give you the dog's ''girth measurement." The "chest measurement" is 1/2 the girth measurement for most breeds. You may also need a separate chest measurement for certain breeds.

    • 2

Compare your measurement with the sizing chart, typically found on the harness packaging. Should the measurement fall between two harness sizes, the harness manufacturer recommends the larger size.

    • 3

Place a regular flat dog collar around the dog's neck. Put the harness on according to the instructions. Praise and feed your dog treats, and allow it some time to get accustomed to the feel of wearing the harness. Some dogs may feel a bit awkward at first, but in a little time should get used to it.

Attach the leash to the top clip of the harness and the ring on the dog's flat collar as well. This way, you will have more control over unexpected behaviors and the chest strap stays in place better.

    • 5

Go on a brief walk in a quiet setting with little distractions. Start with the dog behind you; encourage your dog to follow you by pulling the leash gently towards you. Once the dog is next to you, stop walking, praise and feed your dog treats.

Take the slack out of the leash and move forward again for three to four steps. Once the dog is next to you, stop walking and again praise and feed it treats. Train the dog on the harness at first. Once the dog starts responding well, incorporate the harness into your routine daily walks.
