How to Potty Train Yellow Lab Puppies

Yellow Labradors are known for being excellent family pets. They are easy to train, eager to please and intelligent. When you bring that cute puppy home for the first time, you'll realize very quickly that the top priority is potty training. Fortunately, Labrador retrievers learn very quickly, so with a little bit of effort, you'll have that puppy fully housebroken soon. You'll accomplish this with time, consistency and lots of patience.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an area outside where you'd like your yellow Lab puppy to potty. Make this an area that is easy to get to quickly and that would be a good permanent potty area as the puppy grows to be an adult dog.

    • 2

Put your puppy in its crate when you can't monitor its behavior. Puppies do not like to eliminate where they sleep. Keeping your puppy in the crate will help it learn to wait until you take it outside and will help prevent an accident in your home.

    • 3

Choose a word that you'd like to use to tell your puppy to go potty. Popular choices are "hurry up" and "go potty."

    • 4

Put the leash on your puppy and walk it out to the potty area every 60 minutes. Walk it back and forth while saying your cue words repeatedly. When it begins to eliminate, continue saying the cue words. After it is finished, give your puppy a treat and lots of praise.

    • 5

Put your puppy back into the crate if it does not eliminate after a few minutes. Take it out for another try about 20 minutes later.

    • 6

Play with your puppy after it eliminates outside. Allow your puppy some supervised play time in the house before putting it back into its crate.
