Dog Choke Collar Instructions

Training large dogs can be difficult without a way to control them. This is where choke collars come in to play. According to the website Country Brook Design, choke collars are not meant to choke dogs, but rather press on the dog's brachial nerve. This gets the dog's attention without actually harming the dog. It is important to use the choke collar correctly to effectively train your dog. Once your dog is successfully trained, you can discontinue using the choke collar.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a choke collar that is 2 inches larger than your dog's skull. You can measure your dog's skull yourself, or get some help from the clerk at the pet store where you are purchasing the choke collar.

    • 2

Slide the collar over your dog's head and rest it on your dog's neck. Do not place the chain under your dog's neck.

    • 3

Look for the live ring on the collar. The live ring is the larger ring that the leash is connected to. This ring should be on top of the dog's neck, just below the back of the dog's head. This position allows you to tighten the collar, and then release it. If the live ring falls under the dog's neck, you will not be able to release the choke hold.

Tighten the choke collar briefly when your dog does something it is not suppose to. Do not keep the chain tight. Release the choke hold after only a few seconds. This is all your dog needs to understand that you did not approve of its actions.

    • 5

Remove the choke collar once the training session is over and put it away. Switch to a regular collar.
