How to House Break a Puppy in 5 Days

Puppies. Everyone loves them, because they are so cute and adorable. They love that little puppy smell and the way a puppy returns the love it's given ten-fold. Sooner or later though, your puppy will need to be trained on what it can and can't do in the house. Especially important is house breaking a puppy from going potty on the carpet and floors.

Instructions

  1. Get Them Where They Sleep

    • 1

Train the puppy to the crate---this is good, because usually they won't go where they sleep. So when they are let out, they need to go outside and once they learn that, it will be easier to make them understand.

    • 2

Leash them. Collar and leash---if you live in an apartment building where you have to take the puppy out, this will be a double training. Get them used to the collar and then the leash; by the time your puppy learns that going outside means it's fun to go for walks, that's half the battle won. Remember that dogs like to be with their owners; they give and want attention. So make it a fun outing.

Puppy pads work with some dogs; they smell like 'pee,' so the dog gets that it's supposed to go there. Paper training is the same, only without the smell. Once a dog understands where it needs to go, then it is easier. After an accident on the floor, immediately put the dog on the paper or puppy pad, if you can't readily put it outside.

Remember that puppies are like babies. They nap, they play, they drink and they eat. Once they have had their meal, they will need to go outside. When they wake up from a nap, they will need to go outside. If you establish a schedule, it is easier. Be aggressive about this, as you'll need to train yourself as well.

Most importantly, be firm and use a stern 'No' when the puppy does something that isn't allowed. Never hit the puppy, because then it will begin to connect that with your coming near them with anything raised, and it will cower or run.
