How to Train an American Eskimo Puppy

Just like any dog, an American Eskimo puppy needs to be trained to avoid behavior issues. According to "The Dog Breed Info Center," some of these behaviors include separation anxiety, obsessive barking, hyperactivity and aggressiveness. A puppy that does not have the stress and responsibility of being a pack leader is in a more calm and obedient state of mind. One way to show your dog you are leader is by taking it on proper walks as well as using command words and leash tugs at the right time.

Choose command words and stick to them, such as "hey," "no," "sit," "heel," "stay," "come here," "lie down," and "quiet." Use commands when your puppy misbehaves. Growl a little as you say the word if your puppy does not respond to your command the first time.

Place the collar around your puppy's neck, and attach the leash. Walk in front of your puppy and lead it. This shows your puppy that you are the alpha, or the leader of the pack.

    • 3

Keep walking if your puppy starts to bark at another animal or person. Gently tug the collar once so your puppy's attention returns to you.

    • 4

Make your puppy sit if it starts pulling on the leash. Say " sit." Place your hand on your puppy's backside and push it down.

    • 5

Make sure your puppy is calm if you decide to stop for any reason. Your puppy could stand, sit or lie down.
