How to Train a Yorkie to Sit

Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, puppies are small, endearing animals often purchased as lap dogs. The reality is that Yorkie puppies are tiny bundles of energy that will tear through a home, leaving its contents destroyed in the process. One way to ensure a Yorkie puppy learns to remain obedient to his new master is through the utilization of the “sit” command. The Yorkie is naturally intelligent and will learn this command within a matter of days.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a handful of treats into a small plastic bag. Place the bag into your pocket so they are easily accessible.

    • 2

Call the Yorkie to you. If the Yorkie will not come willingly, pick her up and place her front of you.

    • 3

Pull out a treat and place it in your hand. Close your hand and place the treat in front of the Yorkie.

    • 4

Allow the Yorkie to sniff your hand and the treat inside.

    • 5

Place your treat-filled hand above the Yorkie's head and gradually lift your hand. The Yorkie will naturally lift his head and shoulders, which will eventually cause the Yorkie's bottom to lower to the floor.

    • 6

Utter the word “sit” while the Yorkie's backside is moving toward the floor in a clear voice. Give the puppy the treat in response to this desired outcome.

    • 7

Repeat this process several times a day. Eventually, the treat can be removed from the equation and the puppy will begin to “sit” when the command is uttered.
