How to Stop a Puppy From Pooping in the House

Puppies can be an enjoyable addition to any household. They make great companions and can be trained to be watchdogs for family or for individual protection. A new puppy must be trained, in order to become an agreeable pet. Without proper training, it can be difficult to get your puppy to use the bathroom outside. If you have an ample amount of time to spend with your new dog, it can be fairly easy to house train.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate an area for your new puppy to stay, when it is not with you, such as a crate or a room. Never give a new puppy free reign of the house.Your pup does not yet know its boundaries, and will use the house as a bathroom. This also will encourage your pup to hold its bladder---until you are home---because your pup will not want to mess where it sleeps.

    • 2

Take your puppy out, as soon as you return home and at regular intervals throughout the day. Your pup can only hold its bladder for approximately one hour for each month of life (in the first year), suggests the Humane Society. Make sure to utilize the same area of land, as your dog's scent will build up, over time; and your pup will begin to associate that area as its bathroom.

Praise your pup, when it defecates outside.

Repeat Steps 1 through 3, until your pup no longer defecates in the house. Increase the length of time between bathroom breaks, slowly.
