Eating and Sleeping
-
Puppies tend to relieve themselves immediately upon waking up or after eating. Take you puppy to the pad immediately after each of these activities each day to establish a routine. Do not let your puppy wander away from the pad for at least three to five minutes, if you do, it may find an alternate location to relieve itself.
Watch for Signs
-
Puppies tend to run around, smell the ground profusely or whine immediately before they relieve themselves. If you see this type of behavior, pick up or lead your puppy to the pad. Again, try to keep your puppy near the pad for several minutes to give it time to relax and relieve itself.
Use Positive Reinforcement
-
Each time your puppy uses the pad, provide it with a treat or additional affection and praise. Consistent positive reinforcement tends to decrease the amount of training time that is needed.

Puppy Pad Training Tips
Puppy pads are square foam pads that are commonly used to house train new puppies. The pads have waterproof liners on the bottom to prevent moisture from soaking through to your floor. They are also treated with scents that are meant to prompt your puppy to do its business on the pad as opposed to other areas of your home. Training your puppy to use a pad is not terribly difficult; however, the more involved you are with your training, the less time it will take for your puppy to understand that bathroom activities must occur on the pad.
