Troubleshooting a Pet Smart Underground Fence

Retailer PetSmart sells underground control fences by PetSafe. The system functions by generating a radio signal from a fence transmitter through buried wire. Your pet identifies the buried wire with visual boundary flags. If your pet reaches a warning zone, a beep sounds. If your pet goes over the defined line, a safe “static correction” is delivered to your pet’s neck through contacts. Problems with the fence can be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the battery in the receiver collar if the collar doesn’t beep or produce the corrective zap. Check both lights are illuminated on the fence transmitter.

    • 2

Check that the power adapter is plugged into the fence transmitter if the power light is off. If the power light is on and the loop indicator light is off, make sure both ends of the wire are plugged into the boundary wire terminals on the fence transmitter.

    • 3

Trim your pet’s fur if the collar beeps but your pet doesn’t respond to the corrective zap. Your pet’s fur may be restricting contact. Repeat the training steps in which your pet learns the location of the wire by visually identifying with the boundary flags.

    • 4

If the collar does not activate until reaching the boundary wire, adjust the boundary width control knob clockwise to increase working distance. The collar should beep a few feet before actually crossing the wire.

    • 5

Adjust the knob counterclockwise if the collar activates while the pet is in the house. The distance needs decreasing.
