Tracking Basics
-
In the beginning phases of teaching tracking, it is best done on a good solid dog harness and a six foot leather or cotton webbed leash. Leashes are essential, so choose one that is comfortable in your hand and clips securely to your dog's harness. This is not the time to purchase one of the new no-pull harnesses, as you will need the dog to do some pulling as it learns to follow the scent.
You will need small marker flags to mark your tracks so that you remember where they are. These are easily found at hardware or home supply stores. While there, purchase a few heavy duty leather work gloves. A glove or a favorite flat dog toy that has treats on the top will mark the end of every track during the training process.
To mark the track and keep the dog's nose scenting the track, you'll need to purchase some small, highly scented dog treats. Some tracking trainers use hot dog slices or small pieces of dried salmon. Choose something that you can easily handle and that will not upset your dog's stomach. The key ingredient in the treats that are used is that of smell, so buy the most fragrant treat that you can afford and that your dog will adore.
Advanced Tracking Supplies
-
As the dog advances and is successfully completing longer tracks, you will want to upgrade some of your training equipment. A longer tracking line will be needed. The line must be secure and comfortable in your hand. Both round and flat nylon long lines are available in 30 foot lengths from J and J Dog Supplies on their website. Leash clip sizes are available for both small and large breed dogs.
The tracking harness of choice, also available from J and J Dog Supplies is made of soft nylon and features secure hardware. Ordering directions tell you how to properly measure your dog to ensure a comfortable fit.
Training Bag
-
Since training for tracking takes place away from a stationary area, it is essential that you find a training bag that can carry supplies. The bag will need to be carried as an easily accessible, hands free waist bag. The folks at Pawmark have designed their own training bag to meet the specific and unique training needs of trackers. The bags are available on the Pawmark website.
Safety Equipment
-
Carry first aid supplies that allow you to tend to minor injuries in the field. First aid kits made specifically for dogs are available from most pet supply outlets.
You will also need to be mindful of using insect repellents appropriate for dogs or flea, tick and heartworm preventatives if you track in areas where insects are present. It is a great idea to carry an anti-histamine in the event that your dog gets bitten or stung while on a track.
Always carry a cell phone that includes emergency numbers while tracking. Try not to track alone in remote areas without some means of communication.
