Things You'll Need
- Bedding or pillows
- Dog toys
Instructions
Place soft bedding and pillows inside the crate. Bare metal or plastic crates may create discomfort for your dog.
Place toys or bones inside the crate. Toys and bones provide your dog with familiarity, and entertain her if she feels bored or lonely. A busy dog will be less likely to whine for you.
Crate your dog for short periods of time to start. Sit with him while he's in the crate for five minutes, go to another room for another five minutes, and then come back and release him. Praise him when you release him from the crate. Gradually continue this process until your dog can sit in his crate for 30 minutes without whining, and then you can begin leaving him in there while you go away for short periods of time, like a trip to the store.
Place the crate in your room. Your dog should not feel that being crated means he's isolated from you, and ensuring that he is near you when in his crate will calm him down and reduce his tendency to whine. You can move the crate to where you desire as your dog eventually becomes comfortable with it and does not whine.
Give your dog attention when he's quiet. Praise him when he's not whining by talking to him or playing with him from outside the crate.
Ignore the whining, no matter how long it takes your dog to stop. Your pet wants your attention. Each time you respond to the whining, you are giving him what he wants and making it more likely he will whine again.
