Choose a collar that has varying settings. Shock collars deliver a static shock to the neck of the dog by the way to two metal prongs. A shock collar should ideally have a shock intensity setting that can be increased or decreased according to the response of the dog. Some dogs my require a stronger shock than others in order to react in the appropriate manner. The settings should be able to be adjusted on the remote rather on the collar.
Choose a shock collar that allows the user to deliver a tone separate from the shock. When the tone is followed by the shock, the dog learns to respond to the sound of the tone. The tone can be used as form of verbal reprimand or as a form of clicker training.
Choose a shock collar which has a radio transmitter distance that is appropriate for the type of training that you will be doing. If you are training sporting dogs you will want to purchase a collar that has a greater reception range. If you are training basic commands a shorter range collar will be sufficient.
How to Chose a Shock Collar
Shock collars can be used as an effective form of reinforcement to train a dog in obedience or sport. The collar is placed around the neck and controlled by a remote control that delivers a static shock at varying settings. A shock collar provides a trainer with opportunities to correct behaviors from a much greater distance than leash training allows. There are many brands of shock collars on the market. Choosing a shock collar is dependent on the use of the collar, the type of dog and the distance for which you need the collar to work.
