Instructions
Set your alarm clock to the time your dog usually wakes you up. When it goes off, get up promptly and engage your dog in a game or feed it, whichever is your normal routine. Do not get up before the alarm clock goes off. If your dog anticipates the clock, set it earlier the next morning.
After a week or more to establish a routine, set the clock five minutes later. Don't get up before the clock goes off. Be patient and ignore your dog.
Repeat gradually until you have set the time back by 20 to 30 minutes. Each time you set the clock later, be sure to give at least a week to establish the routine by setting it back further. This will take more time but will be worth it in the end.
How to Train a Dog to Sleep Later by Setting an Alarm Clock
Your dog's day begins when you get up. It gets to eat, play, go for walks and get petted only when you are present. Thus, your awakening from eight hours of slumber is exciting for your dog, which will often prompt your dog to wake you long before you prefer to get out of bed. To get your dog to allow you a few extra minutes of sleep, train him just as you were trained--with an alarm clock.
