How to Make a Dog on a Leash Go Potty

Many times a puppy is too rambunctious to be allowed to roam free in a backyard. In this case you must take the puppy or dog out into the yard to eliminate on a leash. Most dogs prefer to sniff around on the ground for several minutes to find an ideal spot to void. There are ways to speed the process along to help a dog eliminate when on a leash.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the dog onto the leash and say the word "outside" once the dog shows signals that it is ready to void. These signals include whining, sniffing at the ground scratching at the door.

    • 2

Take the dog outside to the same area each time and allow it to sniff around in a small area. Do not allow it to wander. The dog will smell the urine and feces already on the ground and associate this area with voiding.

    • 3

Tug gently on the leash each time the puppy becomes distracted by a squirrel or another dog. The puppy must learn that it is outside to void, not play.

    • 4

Wait until the dog begins to potty. Once this occurs, utter the command "potty" in a happy, energetic voice.

    • 5

Give the puppy a treat for voiding outside. Keep a few treats in your pocket or place a treat bag next to the front or back door to ensure that you remember them on your way outside.

    • 6

Repeat this process over the next few days and weeks. Remember to utter the command in a happy voice so the puppy begins to associate going potty on command with a happy owner.
