How to Use a Dog Obedience Shock Collar

If you are having difficulties training your dog, the use of an obedience shock collar may be your best option. Shock collars emit a small electrical shock to discourage inappropriate behavior in dogs. According to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point website, the shock these collars give is similar in strength to when a person rubs their feet on the floor, then touches a metal object. The shock is small and helps the dog to associate that unpleasant feeling with a certain action. Obedience collars can be very helpful and useful when training your dog to avoid certain behaviors.

Instructions

Place the collar on the dog so that the transmitter is in contact with the skin. Hold the remote in your hand and place the collar on the lowest shock setting. Administer the shock to the dog by pressing the button in the remote and wait until you see the dog respond. The canine may shake its head, try to move its head away from the collar or scratch at the collar when it feels the shock. Leave the collar on the lowest setting that elicits a reaction.

Press the button on the remote to administer the shock when your dog starts to display undesirable behavior. For instance, if you are teaching your dog to stay away from the road, administer the shock when it goes near it. Eventually, the dog will associate the road with the shock and will avoid being close to it.

Teach your dog to come to you when called, as this command can potentially keep your dog from displaying the inappropriate behavior and will likely eliminate the use of the shock collar. Place a retractable leash on your dog and when it gets to the end of the leash, press the button on the collar remote. When the dog starts coming back to you, release the button. This teaches the dog that going away from you earns it a shock, but coming back to you relieves that unpleasant feeling.

Give the dog a command when you teach it to come to you. When it starts to walk back to you, say "here" or "come." The dog will eventually link the verbal command with its action.

Remove the collar once you feel the dog has learned to stay away from or has stopped the inappropriate behavior.
