How to Keep a Dog From Jumping on Furniture

While you surely love your pet, allowing your dog onto the furniture teaches it that it is okay to sit or sleep on the couch, chairs and beds. This will, undoubtedly, leave a trail of fur on the furniture, which in turn sticks to your clothes and, worse yet, on your guest's clothes. There are several different approaches you can take to correct the issue of your dog jumping and lying on furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a dog bed near the furniture. This provides a soft location for the dog to lie and sleep, deterring him from jumping up onto the furniture.

    • 2

Place tin foil on the furniture while you are gone. This keeps your dog off of the furniture, as dogs do not like sleeping or jumping onto the hard, crinkly, metallic surface of the foil.

    • 3

Place a pet vibration alarm onto your couch and furniture. This alarm detects vibrations and sends off a loud alarm for a few seconds, which is enough time to startle your dog and get him off the furniture.

    • 4

Discipline your dog when you see him jumping onto the furniture. Use such methods as scolding your dog or placing him into a crate, basement or garage. If you see dog hair on the couch when arriving home, however, it is too late to punish your animal. The dog isn't going to understand why he is in trouble if it is several hours later, so do not discipline your dog at all in this case. Just clean up the dog hair and leave it at that until you can catch him in the act.

Stay consistant. Allowing your dog to be on the furniture sometimes confuses your pet.
