How to Crate Train a Miniature Chihuahua

Miniature Chihuahuas are not a separate breed of Chihuahua as many people assume. Breeders often label their Chihuahuas "miniature" or "toy" in an attempt to market them as a new breed, when instead they are simply undersized Chihuahuas. These small Chihuahuas can be trained just like their larger counterparts. Crate training a miniature Chihuahua is especially important as they can be seriously injured if allowed to roam around the house unsupervised.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the crate in a low-traffic corner of your living room. Miniature Chihuahuas can be very high strung and placing the crate in a busy spot will only make your dog more nervous. Pad the bottom of the crate with his bed and include three or four toys to keep your dog busy while in the crate.

    • 2

Sit on the floor with your dog and open the crate door. Place a treat or two on the bed and give your dog the crate command. Point out the treat to him and close the door as he steps inside. The treat acts as a reward for him entering the kennel without a fuss.

    • 3

Open the door and pet the dog, making him stay inside the crate with the door open. Miniature Chihuahuas often stand no more than 6 inches tall, so hold your free hand in front of the door to prevent him from escaping. Offer another treat when he stays inside on his own with the door open.

    • 4

Call the dog to exit the crate and allow her to relax outside for a few minutes before commanding her to the crate again. Shut the door as she steps inside, this time leaving the door closed for at least 30 seconds before rewarding her. Let her out of the kennel and repeat, extending the time you leave her in the kennel by 30 seconds each time until she remains calm for 10 minutes.

    • 5

Step away from the kennel once your dog rests quietly for 10 minutes. Quietly walk out of sight, leaving your dog alone but staying close enough that you can reassure him if he becomes upset. Stay out of sight for one minute, extending the time you stay away a minute at a time. Miniature Chihuahuas often are clingy and become frightened when left alone, but do not let him out if he barks.

Leave your house for a brief excursion once your dog is able to stay quiet in the kennel for 30 minutes. Ask her to go into the crate and shut the door, stepping out of the house quietly. When you return home, walk to the kennel without speaking to the dog. Give her a treat for staying calm and open the door to let her out. You can gradually lengthen the duration of your trips, confident that your miniature Chihuahua will rest quietly while you're away.
