Boston Terrier Training Tips

The Boston Terrier has become a very popular dog breed, according to to the website Bostonterriorinfo.com, "well known for its intelligence, gentle nature, and sweet attitude." The website goes on to say that this particular breed is a great dog for families as Boston terriers are loyal and affectionate. However, to make sure that your Boston terrier makes a smooth transition into your family, take time to train your dog. Luckily, Boston terriers are easy to train.
  1. Consistency

    • As with all dogs, it's important to train your terrier consistently every day. However, with Boston terriers especially, you will want to train them in the same place each day, be it your living room, your back yard or your front yard. Boston terriers are easily distracted by new sights and smells so training them in the same place can make all the difference. Repetition is a big part of this consistency. Remember to repeat praise the same way that you repeat the command and praise your dog every time he obeys the command.

    Work with your dog

    • Boston terriers have extremely short attention spans, especially when they are young. Break up the training regimen into multiple sessions throughout the day. When training a puppy, don't make any training session longer than five minutes. When training an adult Boston terrier, don't make any training session longer than ten minutes. Boston terriers are very energetic and active, however their short noses can making breathing difficult. Be aware of this as you train your dog; don't let him get too excited and don't train your Boston outside in the middle of a warm day. Because Boston terriers love to be part of the family, which make them such great dogs for families, it's up to you whether you want to include the entire family in the training process. However, make sure all family members know and use the proper commands and hand gestures to reinforce the training you've completed with the Boston terrier.

    Training for the Trainer

    • When training a Boston Terrier, as with any dog, you the trainer must make sure that you stay calm, regardless of what the dog does. Boston terriers might get overly excited from all the attention they're getting during the training session. As a trainer, you must learn to stop, take deep breaths and remain patient with your dog, always ready to give positive reinforcement. Never get angry with your Boston terrier, no matter how badly he is acting. Remain in control. Show your dog affection when appropriate so that your dog knows that he is loved.
