How to House Train a Labrador

Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, are a famous and beloved dog breed. Labradors make good family dogs because of their friendly temperament. However, like any other dog breed, Labradors must be properly house trained. House training is a term that refers to getting your Lab to go to the bathroom outside the house. House training requires patience, as you'll surely experience a few accidents throughout the process.

Instructions

Place your dog in a crate when you leave the house. Make sure the crate is barely large enough for the dog to turn around in. Labs likely won't soil where they sleep, but if the crate is too large, your dog can soil a corner and still sleep comfortably.

    • 2

Place your Labrador on a leash and take him outside immediately when you come home. Don't wait to take your Labrador out, as he will likely need to go out immediately.

    • 3

Walk your Lab to a spot where you want her to go to the bathroom. Repeat a word or phrase to associate with going to the bathroom. Use a phrase like "Go potty" or "Go to the bathroom."

    • 4

Praise your dog immediately after he goes to the bathroom. Incorporate the word or phrase associated with going to the bathroom, such as "good potty." You may also give your dog a treat.

Repeat the process the next time you take your Lab out. Try to take your Lab to the same place and use the same word or phrase.
