How to Teach a Golden Retriever Puppy to Sit

The golden retriever is recognized as one of the smartest dogs in the world. Their intelligence allows them to typically learn basic commands, such as sit and lie down, with only a few repetitions. Each dog is different, however, and your golden retriever puppy may take a little longer than average to learn. Teaching a puppy to sit is part of basic obedience, and helps to tell the dog you are the one in charge.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a leash to your dog. Bring him outside in a fenced in yard with no distractions. If you prefer, you can also keep him inside the house.

    • 2

Say "Sit" and hold a treat up to her nose. Raise the treat above your golden retriever's head, while continuing to say "Sit." She will bend her head up to see the treat, and eventually be forced into a sitting position. Give her the treat when she is finally sitting.

Praise your dog enthusiastically. Golden retrievers respond best to positive training, so clap your hands, and tell your puppy he's a good boy using a friendly tone of voice.
