How to Blow a Dog Whistle

Dog whistles are used as a training tool by hunters and dog lovers. These whistles cannot be heard by humans but can be heard by dogs. The whistles help you communicate with your dog on a level that they can hear but will not offend your neighbors if you are outside looking for your dog. Using a dog whistle has advantages such as having a constant training method to employ with your dog and communicating with your dog over great distances. Your dog will respond differently to various whistling patterns that you create. These patterns will be known only to you and your dog unless you show others how to use the whistle.

Instructions

Plan the whistle patterns you will use for each command. For example, create one length of sound for a "come" command and another length of sound for "sit." You could use three short bursts for another command. Devise as many patterns as you will need for the commands you want to give.

Place your mouth on the end of the whistle. Blow into the whistle and watch your dog for its reaction. If a dog can hear the whistle, it will turn around and look at you to see what you want. If the dog cannot hear the whistle, you can adjust most whistles until the dog hears it. The adjustments are done by moving a small bar up and down the whistle. Do this until the dog responds to the whistle.

Use the whistle on a regular basis when working with your dog. Use a verbal command along with the whistle pattern at first until your dog understands what you want it to do. Reward the dog with praise and a treat when it does what you want. Stop using a verbal command once your dog responds to the whistle on a regular basis. Move on to the next whistle command and repeat the process.
