How to Stop a Dog From Defecating on the Floor

Housetraining a dog can be a frustrating and lengthy process for you and your dog. Both dogs and puppies can be housetrained in the same way using a lot of repetition, behavior correction, and praise. The success of housetraining relies on your continuous effort to correct your dog's behavior. Keep in mind that it is natural for all dogs (especially puppies) to make a mess in your home occasionally.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a routine for your pet, feeding and taking your dog out at regular times to get him adjusted. Puppies need to go out quite regularly (about every two hours) so schedule accordingly.

    • 2
Take your dog out to the same place to regulate behavior.

Designate a place for your dog to relieve himself. This will help him remember what he needs to do when you take him to this spot since the smells will be familiar.

    • 3
Dog treats make a nice reward for good behavior.

Praise your dog every time he uses the designated spot. Use a soothing voice, pet him, and give him a dog treat.

    • 4

Watch out for the dog lifting his leg, sniffing, or circling around. If this happens, take him outside immediately to his designated spot. If he is in the middle of relieving himself, scold him loudly and take him out to his proper place. Always reward him if he has finished relieving himself outside.

    • 5

Clean up any messes your dog makes in the home so that he will not try to use the spot again. Use something that will eliminate the smell such as a cleaner made for pet clean-up.

    • 6

Avoid scolding your pet if you do not see him relieving himself on the floor. He will not know why you are yelling at him. The best thing you can do is be vigilant and clean up anything that you miss.
