Potty Training Weiner Dogs

Wiener dogs, also known as dachshunds, have a reputation for being one of the most difficult dogs to train. And while this may keep you from trying to run them through an obstacle course, there are certain things, such as going to the bathroom outside, that all dogs need to be trained to do. In order to successfully potty train your wiener dog, you need to start when they're young and stay consistent. Before you know it, you'll have one less thing to worry about.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin training your wiener dog to use the bathroom outside when it is just a puppy. The longer you wait to teach your dog the correct habits, the less chance you'll have of actually turning it into a habit.

    • 2

Take your dog outside every few hours throughout the day, even if you're not sure it needs to use the bathroom. This will give it multiple opportunities to implement the correct behavior.

    • 3

Give your wiener dog a treat when it goes to the bathroom outside. This way, your dog will attach something positive to the behavior. However, if your dog makes a mistake and goes in the house, stay calm. Rewards, and not punishments, are the key to forming the right habits.

    • 4

Keep your wiener dog in the same space, or crate, when you leave it alone at the house. This will not only give your dog a feeling of safety, but will make cleaning up any accidents easier on you.

    • 5

Stay with the routine and expect the potty training process to last for at least a couple of weeks.
