How to Keep My Dog From Getting Out of the Fence

So your Fido has a feisty spirit and a knack for escaping your fenced in yard, and you don't know what to do. First, don't be too hard on the pup. It's in dogs' nature to want to roam and play with other people and animals, or chase down squirrels or cars, and many dogs will jump over, dig under, and yes, even crawl up the fences that are holding them back in order to go have some fun. Of course, a dog left to his own devices can spell disaster, and you, as a responsible and loving pet owner, need to know how to keep the pooch inside the fence. Fear not, for there are plenty of ways to fix your fence so that your beloved dog stays safe at home.

Discover just exactly how your dog is escaping, since that will determine what fixes you need to make to your fence. Is he slipping through an opening in the fence? Or is he digging under it? Or perhaps he's found a good spot to jump or climb over to fly the coop.

Secure any weak or open spots in your fence with chicken wire. Do this by attaching one end of the chicken wire to the weak area of the fence however you can--bending it around the main fence and securing it with zip strings, etc.--then bending the chicken wire at a 90 degree angle and attaching the bottom of the chicken wire to the fence. This will keep your dog from sneaking out of open spots in your fence.

    • 3

Place sink blocks, large stones, or pavers along the bottom edge of your fence to discourage your dog from digging under the fence. You can also dig a trench that's several inches deep along the fence line and fill it with concrete.

    • 4

Extend the height of your fence to make it harder for the dog to jump over. You can either dig up your fence and raise it that way if there's enough buried under the ground, or you can buy fence-height extenders to make the fence taller.

    • 5

Add garden fencing or chicken wire at the top of your fence and bend it inwards at a 90 degree angle to block off a direct exit for dogs to climb or jump over.

    • 6

Plant tall shrubs or install a tall garden fence (around three feet or so) about two to three feet inside the fence to block off any running head start your dog may take to jump over the fence.
