How to Train a Dog to Use a Radio Fence Collar

Radio fences allow your dogs to safely wander your yard without the need for a fence. An electronic radio collar worn by the dog beeps when the dog is getting close to the boundary set by the radio fence. If the dog reaches the boundary end, an electric shock is given to the dog, forcing the dog back into the safe zone of your yard. It's imperative to correctly train your dog when using a radio collar, as doing so trains your dog to stay within the boundaries of your yard and reduces the dog's chance of getting shocked.

Instructions

Lead your dog to the limit of the boundary. During the first two days, walk your dog on a leash around your yard and up to the different boundary points. Ensure that your dog is not wearing the radio collar at this time. Jerk the leash back when nearing the boundary points and lead your dog back into the safe-zone of your yard. Give it praise and talk to it throughout. Some electric-fence makers suggest marking the boundary with a series of flags to give the dog a visual indicator of the boundary, and removing a few of the flags each day of the training until they are all removed.

Place the radio collar on your dog and a separate, nonmetal collar above the radio collar. Lead your dog to the boundary points. The collar will begin to beep once within a foot of the boundary, depending on the settings you determined for the boundary. Let your dog cross the boundary. The dog will receive a shock from the collar as he does so. Calmly lead your dog back into the safe zone and praise it. Repeat this at different boundary points for two more days.

Distract your dog by having a family member, neighbor or friend walk outside the boundary. Place the radio collar and a nonmetal collar on your dog. Walk the dog on a leash outside and instruct a family member, friend or neighbor to walk past the boundary. Lead your dog back to the safe zone and praise the dog as you get back to the safe zone. Repeat this procedure with someone walking just outside of the boundary. Continue this practice for three days. Praise your dog each time it does not venture outside the boundary.

Supervise your dog without a leash if it has demonstrated that it understands what the boundary means and refuses to go outside of it during the distraction phase. Place the radio collar on your dog and play with it inside the safe zone, and occupy yourself with other tasks while your dog is outside. If your dog should escape, take the radio collar off or turn the transmitter off before bringing the dog back inside the boundary. Turn the transmitter on or put the collar on once the dog is back inside the safe zone. Continue this for five days; if the dog does not escape or go outside the boundary after five days, you can leave the dog alone when it is outside.
