How to Train a Dog to Bark at the Door

For many people, dogs are not only pets and cherished members of the family, but also are good for home protection against possible intruders. One of the most effective ways to alert any unwanted guests that there is a dog in the home is to teach the dog to bark each time there is a knock at the door. The dog must first be taught to "Speak" on command before it can be taught to bark at a specific stimulus, such as a knock on the door.

Instructions

  1. Teach a Dog the 'Speak' Command

    • 1

Place a treat in front of the dog's face. Make sure the dog notices the treat, but do not allow it to eat the snack.

    • 2

Say the command "Speak" in a happy, congenial voice. This will show the dog that barking is a welcome outcome, not an offense that will be punished.

    • 3

Continue to say the command "Speak" until the dog barks. Once the dog barks, give it the treat and a lot of praise.

    • 4

Repeat this process a few times a day over the next few days or weeks. Eventually, the dog will not require a treat as a reward and will bark a few times once it hears the command "Speak."

Teach a Dog to Bark at the Door

    • 5

Ask a friend or family member to step outside of your home and knock on the door.

    • 6

Say the command "Speak" while the helper is knocking on the door. Give the dog praise once it barks. Ask the friend to come in, then step outside once again and knock on the door. Again, give the dog the "Speak" command and praise it when it barks.

Repeat this process until the dog begins to associate a knock at the door with the command "Speak." This may take several days or weeks of practice. Eventually, the dog will bark each time it hears a knock at the door.
