How to Train a Dog to Bark When Going Outside

Potty training a dog is arguably one of the most important steps to welcoming a pet into the family. However, teaching your dog not to eliminate indoors will be useless if you are unable to train your dog to communicate his needs to you. There are many ways you can have your dog tell you he needs to go outside and relieve himself. Whether it is barking, staring at the door, or ringing a bell on the door knob, the message should be clear---"I have to go outside!"

Instructions

    • 1

Leash your dog when indoors and tie the leash to your waist. This will keep your dog from wandering off and having an accident in the house.

    • 2

Observe your dog's behavior right before he needs to go to the bathroom. He may begin pacing, panting, whining, or pulling on the leash.

    • 3

Wait for your dog to make an audible noise alerting you to his bathroom needs. This noise can be anything from a small grumble or whine to a bark.

    • 4

Respond excitedly, "Do you have to go outside?!" and quickly usher him outdoors to the potty area. Allow him only a few minutes in the potty area to do his business. If he eliminates outside, praise him with "Good boy!" and a treat. You can now let him play for a short while, so he can associate eliminating outdoors with good things. If he doesn't use the bathroom after a few minutes, take him back indoors. Try again in 5 to 10 minutes.

Repeat this process each time your dog begins to act like he has to go to the bathroom. Wait a little longer each time to allow your dog to voice his needs a little louder. Ignore the initial whines until your dog barks. Make sure you respond immediately once he barks. He will quickly make the connection between barking and going outside.
