Establish a routine. Let your puppy out regularly at the same time every day so he can always expect that he will be outdoors soon to eliminate. Put him in the same spot outside each time so that he associates that spot and being outside with being allowed to eliminate. Alternatively, you can train your puppy indoors with the use of a puppy training pad which will neutralize the odors and provide for easy clean-up.

Supervise the puppy at all times to keep him from eliminating inside. When you see signs that the puppy is about to eliminate, take the puppy outside or to his training pad. Signs include spinning around in circles and sniffing around like he is looking for the right spot. At night, or at times you cannot supervise your puppy, place him in his kennel. He will be unlikely to eliminate in his kennel because it is an enclosed space, which will teach him to control his elimination patterns until he is outside or on his training pad.

Praise your puppy when he eliminates in the proper place. You may also try giving your puppy a treat as a reward for a job well done. When the puppy associates this good behavior with your happiness, he will be eager to please you by continuing the good behavior.
