How to Potty Train Puppies in the Rain

Most people do not like to go outside when it rains, and most dogs do not like to do so, either. As a result, many pooches avoid going potty when it rains, leaving their owners frustrated and often cleaning up accidents in the home. One of the best ways to avoid this scenario is to get your dog used to the rain early on, when you are potty-training him as a puppy.

Take your puppy out in the rain to play. Doing so will help the puppy associate happy and fun times with the rain and may prevent any anxiety or trepidation towards the rain.

    • 2

Give your puppy a word to associate with going to the bathroom. Saying commands such as "potty" or "empty" when your puppy eliminates will eventually teach him to do so when you say those words. If your puppy can eliminate on command, he will likely do so, no matter what the weather.

    • 3

Give your puppy treats every time he eliminates outdoors. Doing so will help the puppy associate elimination with rewards and will encourage him to do so, despite the weather.

Place a rain jacket or dog boots on your dog to help him tolerate the rain. Some dogs do not like being in the rain because they do not like to get wet. Wearing the boots and jacket may help the dog feel more comfortable in the rain by keeping him somewhat dry. Again, place these items on your dog when he is a puppy to get him used to wearing them. Give the dog treats and praise when he wears the items to associate rewards with the clothing.
