How to Train Male Puppies

Male and female puppies are trained the same way. However, male puppies need a bit more attention in certain areas. All puppies benefit from obedience training, particularly those that show problem behaviors such as inappropriate urination, a trait that many male puppies exhibit. Fortunately, with persistent training and a devoted owner, it is possible to train male puppies.

Instructions

Show your male puppy you are in control. Male puppies, particularly those not neutered, might try to take charge in their homes. If the pup thinks it is in charge, it will not obey your commands. Dogs by nature look for leaders, and if they don't find one, they might try to assume the role. Show your pooch who is boss by always walking through doors ahead of it, keeping it next to you on walks, and making your pup wait for your permission before it eats.

Discourage your male puppy from urinating excessively. Many male puppies lift their legs several times during a walk to mark their territories. Some dogs even take this undesirable behavior into the home. If your pooch begins to lift its leg inside, stop it and take it outside to an acceptable area, then give it a treat as a reward for urinating in the proper place. After a few times, your male puppy learns to not lift his leg inside.

Place your male puppy in a crate when you cannot provide supervision. Dogs do not like to eliminate where they sleep, so by keeping it in the crate, then taking it outside immediately after opening the crate door, you teach it to go to the bathroom outside.
