Dog Training for Aggressive Dogs Using Pinch Collars

The pinch collar, also known as a prong collar is a collar with steel interlocking links and small prongs that sit against the dog's neck when worn. There is much controversy surrounding the pinch collar with some people thinking it is cruel and inhumane while others believe it is a gentle and effective training tool. According to Dog Owner's Guide the pinch collar is a gentle training tool for dogs that when used properly doesn't harm the sensitive neck area or throat.
  1. Uses

    • The pinch collar is not right for every dog, but it may work very well for certain dogs. According to Teacher's Pet K-9 School, pinch collars are a good choice in training methods for dogs that are aggressive or whose owners have a hard time controlling them. When used properly they can help owners gain control and leadership over an aggressive dog. When trying to decide whether to use a pinch collar, it is always recommended to consult a professional.

    How it Works

    • While some people view pinch collars as cruel, Dog Owner's Guide points out that they are vastly misunderstood. Contrary to the belief that they hurt the dog, they actually sit high enough on the neck that they don't put pressure on the larynx. Instead, when given a quick pull and released, the collar literally pinches together and releases. It does not hurt the dog, but merely serves to get their attention.

    Fit

    • If you choose to use a pinch collar for training, it is important to get the proper size and further fit it to your dog's neck. The pinch collar should fit snug to the dog's neck. You should be able to fit one finger in between the dog's neck and the prong, but no more. It should also sit high on the neck, about an inch below the ears. The collar should not twist or move easily on the dog's neck. To adjust the pinch collar, you can squeeze the prongs together and slide a link out.

    Putting it On

    • To put on a pinch collar the prongs should go on the inside. You should not slide the collar over the dog's head; rather, squeeze the prongs together as you would to remove a link. Wrap it around the dog's neck and squeeze the prongs together to slide them back into place.

    Additional Considerations

    • Pinch collars are for training only. Your dog should not wear it continuously. Teacher's Pet K-9 School also says that you should never let your dog pull on the leash when wearing a pinch collar. Instead the leash should be loose and you should jerk the leash fast and release it only to get your aggressive dog's attention to correct a behavior.
