How to Refinish Wood Floors With Pet Stains

Wood floors are among the easiest parts of your home to ruin with a stain, particularly from moisture. Even a small amount of moisture can stain your wood floor. Pet stains can results from all sorts of accidents that generally involve some form of liquid. Once your pet stains your wood floors, there might not be any way to remove the stain without stripping and then refinishing the wood. Once conventional cleaning methods fail, be prepared to refinish your wood floors to eliminate pet stains once and for all.

  • Mineral spirits
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

      Clean the pet stain thoroughly by rubbing with a cloth soaked in mineral spirits. This will remove any remaining residue from the pet stain. Dry immediately with a clean cloth.

      Sand away some of the stain using 100-grit sandpaper and a belt sander.

      Replace the 100-grit sandpaper with 150-grit sandpaper and sand the stain again.

      Clean up the dust using the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner or a small portable vacuum cleaner.

      Clean the wood floor again with mineral spirits on a cloth and dry immediately.

      Check the wood floor. If you can still vaguely see the pet stain, add some bleach to a cloth and lay it over the stain for about five minutes. Rinse with water and dry.

      Use 150-grit sandpaper to manually sand the area again to remove any remaining bleach residue.

      Apply a matching wood stain to your wood floor using a standard paintbrush. Brush with the grain of the wood and apply a second coat of stain once the first coat dries.
