How to Stop a Labrador Puppy From Barking

Labrador puppies are little bundles of energy that can keep their new family running from sun up to sun down. Unfortunately, some lab puppies also bark because they are excited, nervous or just bored. This nuisance barking may cause trouble with your neighbors, and may even warrant a visit from the police. With some training and consistency, unwanted barking can be stopped without the assistance of a professional dog trainer, and peace and quiet can be restored to your home and family.

    • 1

Hold a treat in front of the puppy's face and utter the command "stop barking," but do not give it to him until he stops.

    • 2

After the puppy ceases to bark, hold another treat in front of him. Utter the command to "stop barking," but this time, wait to give the puppy a treat when he stops barking for five seconds.

    • 3

Repeat this process, waiting a little longer each time before giving the puppy the treat. Eventually, the puppy will cease barking when the command "stop barking" is uttered.
