How to Keep a Dog From Barking a Lot

Barking is one of the most common behavior problems in dogs. It can be particularly annoying to neighbors of a dog that barks too much. It can cause the dog owner to have to place the dog in a new home or try to train the dog. Barking can occur for several reasons, and it is up to the dog owner to begin the process to help their pet learn proper behavior.

Train your dog. This will require a lot of your time and patience, but your dog will learn to listen to your commands. You can either take your pet to a professional trainer or do it yourself. Either way, you will need to remain consistent at home.

    • 2

Learn what is causing your dog to bark. For example, your dog could bark out of excitement, not getting your attention or at a stranger walking by. Knowing the cause will help you determine what to do to keep your dog from barking too much.

Give your dog commands for different behavior when they start barking. For example, if they are barking at a stranger walking by, call their name. When they come to you, tell them to sit. If the dog is barking out of excitement, command the dog to sit and stay. When the dog is barking for your attention, you may need to spend more time with him/her. You can take the dog to the park, for a long walk or go jogging. Exercise is important for a dog especially when they get to spend time with you.

Reward your dog for listening. When they listen to your command to stop barking, give them a treat or praise. This will encourage your pet to react positively. Make sure to have them remain quiet for a couple seconds before rewarding them.
