Instructions
Place the pee pad in the spot where you want the dog to urinate and defecate. This spot should be away from the dog's bedding and food. If your dog already has a preferred spot to go in the house, place the pee pad there.
Show the dog the pee pad. Some dogs are timid about new additions to their environment, so allow the dog to sniff around and get familiar with the pee pad.
Take the dog to the pee pad after playtime, eating, or when your puppy wakes up from a nap. Veterinarian Delbert Carlson and physician James Giffin write that carrying to the dog to a specific spot at these times will inspire it to pee or poop in the appropriate spot.
Praise your dog when it pees on the pad. Use an enthusiastic tone and petting that the dog likes. Your dog will associate the praise with the act of peeing on the pad.
How to Pee Pad Train Your Dog
Pee pads are plastic-lined absorbent pads that soak up and hold your dog's urine. Less messy than newspapers, pee pads come in both disposable and washable varieties. Some varieties are impregnated with a scent that attracts dogs. Most dogs quickly learn the pee pad is the correct spot for them to urinate and will return to it each time they need to pee. Change the pads daily to keep odor at a minimum.
