How to Train Your Yorkshire Terrier Puppy to Come

One of the most useful commands to teach any puppy, including your precocious Yorkshire terrier, is the "come" command. The "come" command can be utilized when your puppy is exploring other dogs and people, or if you find yourself in a park without a leash and a runaway puppy. All that is required for teaching your Yorkie the "come" command are a few treats and a little time alone with your rambunctious new best friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your puppy a few feet in front of you. It is best to attempt this command in a quiet room with no other people present.

    • 2

Utter the command "come" in a happy, light voice while you pat your knee and bend down toward the puppy. Reward the puppy with a treat if it comes to you in response to the command.

    • 3

Take a few more steps away from the puppy and once again in a happy voice say the "come" command. Wait until the puppy comes to you and give it a treat.

    • 4

Move even further away from the puppy and introduce a distraction, such as another person. Utter the phrase "come" and keep repeating the word until the puppy does eventually come over to you. Show the puppy the treat as an added incentive to come over to you. Once the puppy does finally come to you on command, give it the treat.

    • 5

Place the puppy on one end of a long leash and allow it to wander away from you in a public place, such as a park. Utter the "come" command and once the puppy finally responds, give it a treat. You can tug a little on the leash to get the puppy's attention. Eventually you will be able to take the leash off of the puppy and utilize the "come" command at home and in public.
