How to Teach Your Puppy to Shake

Shaking a hand is a common practice among humans. It allows us to introduce ourselves to one another and shows a measure of respect to our fellow man. When a dog does it, however, it is just plain cute. With a little patience and a few simple steps, you can easily train your puppy to shake her paw.

Instructions

    • 1

In a forceful and excited tone, command your puppy to shake. Use a forceful voice to let your puppy know you mean business. Be excited when you use the command so that your puppy will be excited about performing the trick.

    • 2

While giving the command, reach down and physically shake your puppy's paw. Saying the command while performing the action helps your puppy know what action you want her to perform. Continue to do this until you feel that your puppy has a general idea of what you want her to do.

Give your puppy a treat every time you give the command and shake her paw. Giving a treat every time will encourage her to keep performing the trick because she knows she will be rewarded.

Now that your puppy knows the action she is supposed to do, and knows that she will be rewarded for it, you can start practicing the actual trick. Extend your hand toward her paw and stop when you are about 6 inches away. As you are extending your hand, give the shake command. If she doesn't offer her paw, reach out and shake it, and than reward her with praise. If she does offer her paw, praise her and offer her a treat. Repeat this process until she begins to offer her paw every time.
