How to House Train a Paper Trained Dog

Dog breeders often train puppies to eliminate on papers rather than going in their living quarters. Some dogs are paper trained because their owners cannot get them out for as many potty breaks as they need. Regardless, paper training is a good short-term solution but actually teaches the dog that it's OK to urinate or defecate inside the house. House training a paper-trained dog takes time and patience.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the dog outside on a leash at prime potty times, such as after meals, upon waking, or after play time. Take a soiled piece of potty paper out with you.

    • 2

Place the soiled paper on the grass in the spot you'd like the dog to urinate or defecate.

    • 3

Let the dog explore and sniff the paper. The scent of the urine should make him have the urge to urinate.

    • 4

Praise the dog when it eliminates outside by saying "good dog" or "good potty." Give her lots of pets and a treat if you have one on hand.

    • 5

Repeat the process as often as possible so that the dog realizes that going to the bathroom outside is much more rewarding than going inside.
