The Best Way to House Train a Yorkie Puppy

Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies are cute. Their poop is not so cute. Training your Yorkie pup early is the best way to ensure that she's properly house-trained. Knowing how to train your puppy to go outside is the key to successful house-training.
  1. Stick to a Schedule

    • Set a scheduled time at which you or a desgnated person will take the Yorkie puppy outside to go to the bathroom. This should initially be every few hours and must be consistent so the pup can catch on to the routine. Reward and praise the puppy lavishly for going to the bathroom outside, even if it is a very little amount.

    Watch the Puppy

    • Yorkie puppies are smart. They will find a way to tell you when they need to go out. Watch your puppy for signs of agitation or circling. These are likely indicators that the pup has to go to the bathroom.

    Crate Training

    • While a crate should never be the primary residence of a Yorkie puppy, it can be used to assist in the house-training process. Crate training works because the puppy naturally refrains from peeing or pooping in the crate, as this is where he sleeps. Immediately after removing your Yorkie pup from the crate, take him outside for a bathroom break. Place the Yorkie puppy in the crate for sleeping ovenight or any time he cannot be supervised.

    Patience

    • Yorkie pups, like all puppies, are eager to please their parents, and this extends to their owners. Give your puppy time to realize what is expected of her. Do not harshly discipline a Yorkie puppy for peeing or pooping in the house. Simply clean up the mess and take her outside. Shoving a puppy's nose in fecal matter or urine is not only inhumane, but it is ineffective in house-training. Yelling at a puppy after the act is also ineffective, as a puppy cannot associate immediate yelling with a previous action.
