How Long Can One Leave a New Puppy Alone?

Leaving a new puppy alone is a conundrum. Of course, there are times when this has to happen, but then be sure to keep the following considerations in mind.
  1. Time Frame

    • Depending on the age and type of new puppy you adopted, usually the recommendation is not to leave them alone for more than two to three hours at a time. Four hours is be the longest amount of time to leave them on their own.

    Considerations

    • If puppies are left alone for long periods of time, most will act out. Some may tear up clothes, shoes or anything they can get into. In addition, go to the bathroom in the house when owners are not around.

    Crates

    • In the early stages of training, crates are recommended as a good tool to prevent your new puppy from destroying your house and belongings. Putting a blanket and maybe some toys in with the puppy will comfort it while you're gone.

    Toys and Walks

    • To prevent your new puppy from acting out, playtime and walks are a must. Puppies have lots of energy and need to release that energy several times throughout the day. Walking it two to three times a day is important, allowing it time outside and some time to practice your training skills.

    Adjustment

    • Puppies are always fun, but take a lot of getting used to. Getting used to other pets, your house and you are big changes in a puppy's life, and patience is necessary. There is no telling how long it may take for each individual puppy to get used to their surroundings, but most take a few months for this to happen.
