How to Train German Short Hair Dogs

German shorthaired dogs are the name that refers to German shorthaired pointers. These dogs are primarily used for hunting, and training should begin from day one of bringing home your German shorthaired pointer puppy. There are several things that need to be done to ensure that your hunting dog gives you the most in your hunting experiences and family life. Every hunter ideally wants a hunting dog that is fierce on the field and gentle in the home. Each of these things can be acquired with consistency in training, making and meeting goals and getting everyone involved in the family.

Instructions

    • 1

Think about and write down the goals and milestones you want to meet before buying a puppy. Decide when you should meet those goals. If you have never owned a dog before or are unsure about what are reasonable goals, call your local pet shelter and/or pet expert and ask them.

Feed, groom and exercise your dog daily. Spend a lot of time with your dog and make sure that everyone in the family knows the rules of the dog and is consistent with training and discipline of the dog. If you do not have time for a long walk, you can play with the dog and a chew toy to help release some of the dog's energy and give him the exercise that is needed.

Begin training on day one with basic commands such as sit, stay, come and no. Reward with treats. You must establish the alpha position in your dog's pack. This is important for commanding obedience from the dog in later years.

Enroll your German shorthaired pointer in obedience classes. This will help to reaffirm its basic training and prepare it for hunting training.

    • 5

Take your pointer to an open shooting range so that they get used to the sounds that they will hear on the hunt. This is an excellent opportunity to teach your dog to be calm, sit beside you while you shoot and to be quiet when necessary.

Buy some bird-shaped toys to begin fowl hunting training by playing fetch with the toys. Then you can move on to larger and possibly live fowl.
