Instructions
Anticipate your dog's response and prepare him before guests arrive. Recognize that dogs are by nature territorial and your dog will react to people invading his space. Your dog may be uncomfortable with the influx of new people and the increased noise level. Additionally, your dog may be trying to protect you.
Tire your dog out. Give your dog a walk before your company arrives. All too often you may be rushing around preparing for company while your dog is ignored. Walking your dog will let him burn off some energy and keep him from relaxing before your guests arrive.
Pay attention to your dog before company arrives. Make sure that your dog's needs are met by feeding him and playing with him. You may need to prepare for your guests ahead of time so you can give your dog the attention he needs before your guests arrive.
Provide your dog with a few minutes of attention when company arrives and allow him to get comfortable with the guests.
Teach your dog over time to listen to your commands and to be quiet when company is around. Give your dog a few minutes to announce the arrival of your guests and then ask him to be quiet. If your dog responds properly give him a treat, verbal praise and allow him to remain in the room.
Remove him from the room and distract him if does not get quiet. You can distract your dog by spraying him with a mist of water. Let your dog return to the room so he can have another chance to get comfortable around company.
Ask your dog to be quiet again if he continues to bark. If he still will not stop barking, remove and distract him again. If necessary, remove your dog from the guests permanently, but make sure that he has toys, water, and food so he is comfortable.
