Puppy Care & the Stages of Growth

From the moment they are born until approximately 2 or 3 weeks of age, puppies do not have teeth and are blind and deaf. Sleep will occupy a majority of their time, and at the end of this time, they will open their eyes and attempt to crawl. After this, puppies will continue to go through several stages of growth and development.
  1. Three to Seven Weeks

    • Puppies continue to grow both physically and mentally, especially now that they are starting to socialize with their mother, litter mates and their human handlers. Puppies should receive their first shots and be dewormed between 6 and 7 weeks of age.

    Seven to 12 Weeks

    • Between weeks seven and nine, puppies can be adopted. During this time, they are like a sponge---soaking up information from their surroundings, such as tricks or the differences between good and bad behavior.

    12 to 16 Weeks

    • Commonly known as the "terrible twos" of puppy development, defying their owners and testing the boundaries is to be expected. Teething will also occur at this time, so chew toys are a must.

    17 to 40 Weeks

    • Training should continue during this time, along with having the puppy spayed or neutered.

    40 Weeks to One Year

    • Many pups go through the "teenage" phase of growth during this period, while other breeds are considered fully grown.

    One Year and Beyond

    • Between 1 and 2 years of age, most dogs are fully developed. Dogs should also be switched from puppy food to dog food and be given regular exercise and activity.
